One thing that’s fun? You can pretend to be something you’re not, if just for a little while. Remember the Halloween parties? It’s so hard to tell who’s who when everyone’s got their masks on.
It’s sad though when people wear masks everyday. It’s no fun anymore and can turn into a lifestyle of hiding, loneliness and isolation. So many people wear so many masks that hide who they are. Eventually wearing a mask will cause you to lose your identity in who God made you to be.
Even worse, we know that bad people wear good-looking masks that can cause us to think they are our friends. When in fact they don’t care about us at all.
So 2 things to reflect on this Halloween:
- Live a life of truth without a mask (1 John 3:18). When we hide and pretend all the time, we won’t serve God with all our hearts. Bring any darkness behind the mask into the light. It’s so hard to see out of a mask!
- Hang around others who don’t wear masks and steer clear of those who do (2 Corinthians 11:13). Be sure the people you surround yourself with frequently are ones that are real and seeking more of God. It’s critical that we connect and are in relationship with others that encourage us to serve God more and more each day. This causes us to find and help those who have masks on and don’t even know it yet.
Do you wear a mask? Do your friends wear masks? Today is a great day to take off the costume and start seeing clearly.

Great thoughts....
Imagine showing up to a costume party without a mask.... I'd definitely feel out of place, and might be pressured to put one on real quick. Like you alluded to, or maybe I read between the lines, but showing up at certain places of worship kind of feels like a great big 'silent' costume party, if they all seem to check their emotions at the door. Or maybe that's just my observation.
On the other hand, when everyone seems to be happy and joyful, when I'm not, it's hard to put that happy face on. Needful, but hard.
Thanks for your post.... encouraging.
Thanks Paul for sharing. You have many great insights! One of our greatest challenges is to be real with each other. The enemy wants us to keep it fake so that the we are bound by the things we hide.
