Well thankfully, the Word has something to say about this. Peter wrote about this in his letter to new church plants in Turkey. The letter we know now as 1 Peter was one filled with hope, confidence and joy.
Peter wanted to make sure these new Christ-followers were ready for the stuff they would face in their new walk (or run!). In those places and times, being a Christian could cost them their very freedom or lives.
And in the midst of his encouragement, he paints a picture of a heart that responds in faith. He says to them "Do not fear"..."do not be frightened" and "set apart Christ as Lord." (1 Peter 3:14-15). Great reminders of how we are to trust in our Lord God even when life's circumstances are challenging.
The end of v. 15 really nails the question of how we respond to others with faith. It's not all talk and its not all walk, but rather a heart that is ready (both in word and deed) to respond to someone who needs God when He appoints the perfect time and opportunity.
So think for a moment. If we aren't living lives of faith and obedience to God, who's gonna ask us about the reason we have for hope? Ummm. No one.
On the other hand, when our lives present the opportunity for someone to ask us, we are to be ready, willing and able to "speak" the reason for that hope, which lies in Jesus Christ.
Peter writes "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." 1 Peter 3:15
Thanks Pete for the advice. Now let's not forget to tie our shoes before we run out the door for the race!
