I saw this show the other day on Discovery about some guys who performed extreme jumping acts, sort of like modern day ninjas. You know it was one of those sports science shows that analyze the forces and energy required to perform high-level athletic maneuvers.
In this episode, a guy ran and jumped off a nine-foot platform, did a flip in the air, landed on his feet, and then rolled forward to a stop. It was incredible! I had butterflies just watching it (while sitting on the couch☺).
But the really cool thing about the analysis was the discovery of how this dude transferred momentum (mass x velocity). They concluded that if he had taken the full impact of the landing on his feet, it would have broken his legs and possibly his back and left him paralyzed for life.
The jumper didn’t do that though. He had been trained to land, bend his knees and dive forward into a roll. This technique would transfer all that energy through his body and into the roll. In effect, the energy would just go right through him. Pretty awesome!
So I was thinking about how we all face extreme forces in our lives. Heavy stuff. We do have a choice of how we handle the momentum around us.
We can take it all on our own feet and feel the massive, crippling impact of the full force of energy. And it can mess us up.
Or we can take it, utilizing another way to transfer all this overwhelming raw energy through us and push it out the other end unscathed.
Truth be known, we can’t handle the stuff life throws at us everyday on our own. We have to have help to take these massive problems we have, and transfer the force of death away from us.
Our designer God, made a way for us to do that. He knew we weren’t able to handle the full load without some help. So he gave us another way. He gave us His Son Jesus to take that crushing blow and relieve us of the damage.
Are you crippled by the impact of taking life’s momentum all on your own? If so, there’s a better way. A much easier way. Jesus said “Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly” (Matthew 11:30) MSG.
If life has you paralyzed with fear and wounded from your past, check Him out! Momentum can be a good thing properly channeled.
