“Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” This is the age old question that Cain posed to God after killing his own brother in an angry rage (Genesis 4). We know that Cain had a wicked heart; that he was more into himself than God and because of that he missed the unique opportunity to become all that God had in store for his life.
We live in a world today that constantly tells us that we are not each other’s keepers; that we are supposed to take care of number one and let each man be his own.
Think about it, we strive for independence from one another, we try and get ahead and build up security for ourselves, we close off our personal lives to those around us.
And for what reason?
Because we don’t care anymore. We don’t have a heart for what God has a heart for. We think that all the problems in the world, all the messed up lives around us are someone else’s responsibility. Maybe government, maybe the market, maybe religion?
In the end, each of us challenges God by asking “Am I my Brother’s keeper?” Is it “my job” to help out my brother in need when I’ve got my own stuff to deal with?
Are you asking God the wrong questions? What if we began to ask God: “What can I do for my Brother?” How would that change our hearts? What good could God do through our lives if we got the spotlight off ourselves and onto others in need?
This week at Victory (victorywired.com), we will attempt to answer the question of what a true brother would do. Who are the people in your life that you can help right now?
